Garden visitors

Not only do we enjoy the garden for the produce but we also enjoy it for the visitors.

We have a number of bird feeders dotted about which are visited regularly by numerous birds including Bluetits, Great Tits, Long Tailed Tits,  Greenfinches, Goldfinches, Robins, Wrens, Sparrows, Great Spotted Woodpeckers, Starlings, Blackbirds, Wood Pigeons, Jays, Magpies oh and not to forget the lovely green Parakeets that live round here!

We also have a number of foxes that use our garden as a thorough fare and we get numerous grey squirrels eating the bird food – oh and they quite like strawberries!

One thing I have noticed this year is the definite increase in flying insects such as bees (all types) and hover flies.  And the variety of butterflies has been greater as well.  Last year we only had Cabbage Whites (or Large and Small Whites to give them their proper names!) and Painted Ladies but this year (along with the Whites and Painted Ladies) we’ve also had Common Blues, Red Admirals, Peacocks, Small Tortoiseshells and a Comma.

This is really good news and I am putting it down to the fact that we had a really cold winter which meant that a larger number of parasites (which bees in particular are suffering from) were killed off and also the butterflies hibernated properly and so survived to the following spring to lay eggs.

And now that Autumn is on it’s way we have numerous spiders making beautiful webs amongst the plants.  Must try and get out early one morning and snap a few photos when the dew is still on them!
